Hard to believe we're already into week 3 of the college football season. Time flies when you're having fun. But really, the season hasn't gotten interesting yet. Of course there were a few near upsets last weekend. I Ohio State got a real scare, East Carolina beat up on West Virginia. And Vanderbilt beat my beloved Gamecocks, although its too early to know if that was really an upset. But this week gets a little more interesting. A number of games this week will go a long way in determining bowl eligibilty early for a number of teams. So let's get on with the picks.
Rice at Vanderbilt -- The Commodores may be a better team than many pigskin experts had projected. They lost a number of players from a so-so season last year and were questionable in a number of positions. But dang gum it, they beat the 'Cocks. So who knows. This week won't really provide much more insight either. Vanderbilt 30, Rice 13
Auburn at Mississippi State -- The Auburn Tigers were a little inconsistent last week at home against the Southern Miss Eagles. Seems Tuberville has finally settled on a quarterback, but there are still a number of questions about consistency on this team. The Bulldogs have not been fast out of the gate this year either after having one of their best seasons ever last year. This is the first SEC encounter for both and it's in cowbell heaven. I think it will be closer than many fans anticipate -- Auburn 21, Mississippi State 17
Arkansas at Texas -- Postponed due to Hurricane Ike.
Georgia at South Carolina -- Hmmm, hmmm. The 'Cocks have been extremely lacking in concentration this year. The quarterback play has been extremely inconsistent. The offensive line can't hold water even though there's a ton of experienced talent. Don't be surprised to see Spurrier insert redshirt freshman Stephen Garcia at quarterback at some point during the game. The Dawgs are experienced and strong at quarterback and has a phenom at running back. The game is in the Cockpit and is usually close. Hmmmm, hmmmmm -- South Carolina 21, Georiga 20
UAB at Tennessee -- The Urange didn't fare too well in the opening game on the road at UCLA. UAB is having a subpar year. I don't really expect this to be a close game though -- Tennessee 41, UAB 10
Western Kentucky at Alabama -- Roll Tide, roll tide. Can Saban pull the team back up this week? Or will they play at the level of their competition again like last week against Tulane? Alabama has the experience at quaterback, some incredilble freshmen, and a great coach. Somehow I don't think this game will be a repeat of last's weeks fiasco. -- Alabama 36, Western Kentucky 14
Middle Tennessee at Kentucky -- Well the WIldcats have really padded their early season with a patsy schedule. They will probably go undefeated until they play Alabama. But as with a number of other teams this early, Kentucky still has some questionable talent. Until the SEC seasons gets under way for the 'Cats, who knows what they've really got? -- Kentucky 40, Middle Tennessee 16
North Texas State at LSU -- No brainer here.... -- LSU 48, North Texas State 10
Other national games of interest --
Ohio State at USC -- without Wells, USC 32, Ohio State 12
Michigan at Notre Dame -- used to be a biggie. Bye, bye Weiss -- Michigan 21, Notre Dame 18
Georgia Tech at Virginia Tech -- The Techster will win..<G> -- Georgia Tech 29, Virginia Tech 24
N.C. State at Clemson -- no matter how much I wish otherwise -- Clemsux 48, N.C. State 14
East Carolina at Tulane -- a rising power -- East Carolina 36, Tulane 20
